How New York paychecks are taxed

New York taxes wages from 3.9% to 10.9% in 2026, after lower rates for the first five brackets took effect this year. Income is reduced by a standard deduction of $8,000 (single), $16,050 (married) or $11,200 (head of household) before the brackets apply.

If you live in New York City, you also pay city income tax of 3.078% to 3.876%. Yonkers residents pay a separate surcharge that this calculator does not include. Working in NYC while living elsewhere does not trigger city tax.

Two small payroll deductions fund worker benefits: disability insurance at 0.5% (capped at $0.60 a week) and Paid Family Leave at 0.432% of wages, up to $411.91 for 2026.
