How Texas paychecks are taxed

Texas is one of a handful of states with no personal income tax, so nothing is withheld for the state. Your employer still withholds three federal items: federal income tax, Social Security (6.2%) and Medicare (1.45%).

Social Security only applies to the first $184,500 you earn in 2026. Medicare has no cap, and an extra 0.9% is withheld on wages above $200,000.

Texas funds itself mostly through sales and property taxes instead. The state sales tax is 6.25%, and cities can add up to 2%, for a maximum of 8.25%.

Common questions

Does Texas have a state income tax?

No. Texas does not tax wages, so the only taxes on your paycheck are federal.

Why is my paycheck different from this estimate?

Health insurance premiums, HSA contributions, extra withholding on your W-4 and other deductions all change your net pay. This calculator covers the standard federal taxes and a 401(k).

Do I pay Texas tax on a bonus?

No state tax applies. Federal withholding on bonuses is often a flat 22%, plus Social Security and Medicare.
